CRISIS MANAGEMENT

Titus Goh

What’s a crisis? A crisis is a time of intense difficulty or danger; a major problem requiring urgent attention. When you’re facing a crisis, it’s not easy to think straight even though that becomes much more important, and failing to manage a crisis well can be disastrous. During a crisis you can find out who your real friends are. Is there a friend you have in mind that you would turn to if you’re facing a crisis? How far would they go to help you?

Crises also induce many negative emotions as expected. One of these is fear. There will always be a fear of bad things happening during a crisis. Fear is an emotion God blessed us with to protect us from danger. Feeling fear allows us to identify when we may be in danger and hence to take action earlier. With or without a crisis, there will always be a fear of bad things happening, even if it's not conscious most of the time. Sure, being a christian gives your life meaning and direction. Being a christian means you have hope of escaping death, a moral compass through God’s Word, and an understanding of why you are on earth. But as amazing as that is, christians are still mortal beings on earth for now, and that doesn't exempt us from problems. Christians will fall sick, run into hardships, and have struggles at home and at the workplace. It is natural for christians to feel worry and pain, just like everyone else.

So if the bible doesn’t prevent bad things from happening to us, what does it do? It helps us get through these bad times. God can help us get through anything we could possibly face. We serve an omnipotent God, and through Him christians can do all things (Philippians 4:13). Psalm 28:7 reads “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him”. When we’re faced with a crisis, it may be difficult, but the first thing we should do is turn to God. Who else is going to deliver us? Ourselves? Some other person? In the bible there are numerous examples of people going to God with their problems. One such example is David. David had confidence in God, even when he was facing grave danger, emotional stress, and many powerful enemies. Eventually, he prevailed through everything life threw at him, but in moments of difficulty, he felt as helpless as we do during a crisis. There were times he couldn’t actually do anything. We aren’t really in control of anything while we exist in this universe. The only thing we can do is trust God and then try to deal with the problem to the best of our ability. Things WILL work out, no matter how hopeless it seems to us! There will be factors you can’t take into account, information you have that may be imperfect, and general misjudgments, so really nothing is truly hopeless. Even when the going gets really tough, we can remember our eternal hope in Christ, and how this life and our problems are temporary compared with that.

2022 will undoubtedly be full of challenges and obstacles. While facing them, we can remember that the Lord is our light and salvation. Who is there to fear if God is the strength of your life? (Psalm 27:1) Managing a crisis can also be made easier with friends, a great blessing that God has given us. Christians will always be willing to help or talk to someone in need, which is amazing.

To conclude, everyone has their own problems, but nothing can’t be solved by having the right attitude- turning to God and fellow christians for support.
