GREEN FLAGS

When we consider the closest friends we have in our lives, what are the “green flags” that we see in them? What are the qualities or traits that attract us to these people and make us desire their company? Just as we look for positive signs in relationships, there are encouraging indicators that reveal the spiritual health and maturity in a Christian's life. Here are three green flags that demonstrate authentic faith and Christ-like character.

1. A Heart for God's Word

The first green flag is a genuine love for Scripture and a commitment to studying it regularly. The psalmist declares, "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." (Psalm 119:11) This isn't about adhering to stringent Bible reading schedules, but rather having a sincere hunger to know God through His revelation. Someone who consistently seeks to understand the Scripture, asking thoughtful questions and applying Biblical principles to daily decisions, shows spiritual vitality. They approach the Bible as the Bereans did, who "received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily" (Acts 17:11). This daily engagement with God's Word produces transformation, as "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17).

2. Authentic Humility and Teachability

The second green flag is humility – A willingness to admit mistakes, accept correction, and grow. Pride blinds us to our faults, but humility opens the door to spiritual maturity. James instructs us to "be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath" (James 1:19), which reflects a teachable spirit. Spiritually healthy Christians do not claim to have all the answers. Instead, they approach discussions with gentleness, ready to learn and willing to examine their beliefs against the Scripture. Paul reminds us to "let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself" (Philippians 2:3). When someone can acknowledge his or her shortcomings without defensiveness and seeks accountability from fellow believers, it demonstrates genuine spiritual growth.

3. Consistent Service to Others

The third green flag is a pattern of selfless service – One motivated by love, rather than recognition. Jesus Himself "did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:28). Authentic Christianity is not only about personal piety, but also about manifestation of compassionate action towards others. Look for someone who serves quietly and consistently – Visiting the sick, helping the needy, encouraging the discouraged, or teaching Bible classes. They understand James' teaching that "faith without works is dead" (James 2:26). Their service flows naturally from their relationship with Christ, not from a desire for applause. As Jesus had taught, they do good works so that others "may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16).

Certainly, this is a non-exhaustive list and there are many more green flags that we can consider. We are encouraged to further consider what other qualities are in the people around us, and whether they are of help in our spiritual journey. It is certainly more beneficial for our minds to look for the good (green flags) than the bad (red flags) in people. The three green flags discussed in this article reveal a heart genuinely pursuing Christ. They are not marks of perfection, but indicators of spiritual direction. Let us realise that these qualities are of great value and surround ourselves with people exhibiting them or striving to develop them. As we grow in faith, may we cultivate these qualities in our own lives while encouraging them in others, building each other up in love and truth.

Ask Yourself:

  1. What are three green flags we should look out for in people around us?

  2. Which green flag speakers to you more and why?

  3. What other green flags can you think of?
