HOT WEATHER IN SINGAPORE

“Europe braces itself for a prolonged heatwave as temperatures approach 40°C”, an article from The Straits Times reported. Extreme hot weather has become increasingly common in recent years. In Singapore, the highest temperature ever recorded was 37°C at Ang Mo Kio in 2023. Due to our high humidity, sweat evaporates more slowly from our skin, causing our sticky bodies to feel approximately 2 to 3°C warmer than the actual temperature.

I would like to use the analogy of the heat from a hot weather to describe how to face life’s struggling moments. How can we rely on Jesus Christ for His strength and guidance?

1) Carry a Portable Fan

When Christians encounter hardships, we can turn to our Lord. He guides us through difficult circumstances. Although He may not immediately remove every challenge, He uses these experiences to strengthen and refine us.

When we are in Christ, it’s like carrying a portable fan during a hot day. A portable fan is lightweight and can strap around our necks. It circulates air around us, providing comfort and relief. However, the fan does not remove the heat from the sun. Instead, it helps us endure the heat and continue our journey.

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” - Philippians 4:13

2) Drink Plenty of Water

Jesus Christ spoke about a fountain of water that would satisfy a person forever. “But the water that I shall give him will be in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life” (Jn 4:14).

When we face heat, we may sometimes lose sight of the path ahead. It is like walking through a thick fog, only seeing a short distance in front of us. However, that does not mean we are lost. Instead, we must trust God's guidance and take each step faithfully.

When we hold on to the Author and Finisher of our faith, Jesus Christ, He will lead us through the entire journey.

Water is essential for sustaining physical life. When we drink water, it is absorbed through our digestive system and carried through our bloodstream, helping our bodies regulate temperature and prevent heat exhaustion. In the same way, God's Word gives spiritual life and strength to our souls.

“And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.” — Revelation 21:6

3) Seek an Air-Conditioned Shelter

During a hot day, we may seek shelter in places such as shopping malls or libraries to escape the heat. These shelters provide temporary relief and allow us to rest before continuing our journey.

When facing difficult situations, we should seek relief and spiritual shelter as well. And this is in the Church. The Church is the Bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:23). In the Beatitudes, Jesus addresses different groups of people in His church.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven...” - Matthew 5:3–10

The Church provides spiritual shelter, in which we can find comfort and support during difficult times. We can ask for help and covet members’ prayers. It is a shelter where we can be refreshed, strengthened, and encouraged. 

“Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” - Galatians 6:2

It does not mean that life's challenges disappear, but being in the Church allows us to recover our strength and continue our walk with Christ.

Conclusion

Hot weather reminds us that we need protection, refreshment, and rest. In the same way, life's difficulties remind us of our need for Jesus Christ. 

• A portable fan reminds me that Christ gives us strength to endure trials.

• Water reminds me that Christ provides everlasting life and spiritual renewal.

• Shelter reminds me that Christ gives us a spiritual family through His Church.

When the heat of life becomes overwhelming, we can trust in our Lord, who walks with us through every season.
