TRUST IN THE LORD - PROVERBS 3:5,6

Have you been a Christian for a short period of time or for many years? As a Christian and as a child of God, how much do you believe and trust in God for His guidance? How has that changed each move you make and each day you live?

When there is an important decision to make, do we ask for help or opinions from the people close to us such as your family members or friends? Or do we fully put our trust in our God and ask for His help first? Our God knows the best path for His children. He is a better judge of what we need than we are. We must trust Him completely in every choice we make. We should not omit careful thinking or belittle the ability to reason that God gave us. We should not trust our own ideas or ideas of others but God’s best decisions for us.

Proverbs 3 : 5, 6 – Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

We look at the example of David in 2 Samuel 22 : 3- “the God of my strength, in Him I will trust, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold, and my refuge; my Savior, You save me from violence. What would happen if David had not put his trust in God in His deliverance from his enemy? He would have died. But God saved him because of his total trust in Him. David’s praise to God in Psalm 7 : 1 O lord my God, in You I put my trust; Save me from all those who persecute me; And deliver me. The second part of Proverbs 3 : 5 tells us not to lean on our own understanding, because if we can take things into our own hands without God, we may think that our wisdom is better or higher than our God’s. That should not be the case especially as children of God. If we ask for God’s wisdom yet lean on our own wisdom, we will be like the double minded man in James 1. We then cannot expect to receive what we ask for (James 1:7).

Let’s take a look at Proverbs 3 : 6. Here we are advised in every way to acknowledge God, which means seeking Him for advice and getting direction from Him, not just in  things that are difficult but in every case. Our God can assist us in making a wiser and better decision, and directing us to a better path. Our eyes must be ever towards God and He will surely direct our path, so that our way shall be safe, and we shall benefit from God’s divine guidance.

Finally, Proverbs 16 : 20b, tells us that whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he. In Proverbs 28 : 26, the Bible also teaches us that He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely will be delivered. The same lesson we have learned from David’s example. In addition, Proverbs 29 : 25b – But whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe. We are safe in God’s hand any time we put all our trust in our all almighty God. Lastly, it is better to trust in the Lord, than put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord, than to put confidence in princes (Psalm 118 : 8-9).
