YE ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Vijay

In Matthew 5:14, Jesus tells us, "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid." As disciples of Christ, we are called to reflect His light to those around us. We are not merely called to act but to be transformed so that our lives shine with His love, truth, and righteousness. The acronym L.I.G.H.T. serves as a gentle reminder of five ways in living out this calling.

L - Leave Old Habits and Beliefs

The first step is to leave behind old habits and beliefs that hinder us from obeying Christ or our spiritual growth. In 2 Corinthians 5:17, Paul reminds us that if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creature—the old has gone, and the new is here. Ephesians 4:22-24 encourages us to "put off your old self" and embrace the new life that God offers, created in His likeness. Leaving old thoughts, old principles and old practices behind allows us to walk anew in His light and reflect His righteousness in our lives. The renewed man acts from new principles, by new rules, with new ends and in new company of the Lord and His Church.

I - I am a Child of God

Our identity in Christ is crucial. John 1:12 assures us, "But as many received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name”. When we received Christ, we are adopted into God's family. The privilege of adoption is entirely owing to Jesus Christ; He gave this power to them that believe on His name. God is His Father, and so ours; and it is by virtue of our espousals to Him, and union with Him, that we stand related to God. This truth strengthens our faith and helps us understand that we are no longer defined by past mistakes or worldly standards, but by God’s love and the privilege of being His children.

G - Do Good

As children of God, we are called to imitate His character by doing good. Ephesians 5:1 says, "Be followers of God, as dear children." As dearly loved children resemble their parents in outward features and inner character, so God’s beloved children must imitate Him in goodness and love, faithfully reflecting His mercy and willingness to forgive (1 John 4:16). The name we bear as God’s children obligates us to mirror our Father’s holy nature in all things.

1 John 4:16  And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

In addition, as Jesus said in John 5:35, we are meant to be "burning and shining lights," with our thoughts, words, and actions pointing others to Christ. By living with integrity, we become witness of our Lord and His Word and share this good message to the world.

H - Seek Help by Prayer

Prayer is crucial in our relationship with God. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us to pray about everything, assuring us that God’s peace will guard our hearts. Prayer means presenting our desires to God: “let your requests be made known unto God.” Although He knows our needs, He calls us to express them, show reverence, and affirm dependence on His mercy. In difficulties, prayer connects us with God, providing guidance, peace, and strength. It helps us resist sin, remain calm, and fosters inner peace despite external chaos.

T - Teach the Word of God

Lastly, we are called to share the gospel with others. In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus commands us to "go ye therefore, and teach all nations". As His followers, we are entrusted with the message of salvation and have the responsibility to teach others His Word. By teaching others, we help build the body of Christ and extend His Kingdom. Jesus promises to be with us always, empowering us for this mission.

Conclusion

As followers of Christ, we are called to be the light of the world; shining brightly for all to see so that they may come to know Christ and obey Him. Let us live in a way that reflects Christ’s love, truth, and hope, drawing others to Him.

Ask Yourself:

  1. What does Matthew 5:14 say disciples of Christ should do?

  2. Why can we be confident when we are teaching others?

  3. How have I been a light to the world?

Suggested Answers:

  1. Disciples of Christ should be transformed so that our lives shine with Christ’s love, truth and righteousness.

  2. Jesus told His disciples that He would be with them even till the end of the world in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). In the same manner, Christ will be with us when we go forth and preach the gospel.

  3. You may discuss this with your Bible class teacher.
